[ Korra's suggestion that perhaps, ultimately, if those titans were humans who were being killed were being killed—the suggestion that he could be doing them some kind of favor, or freeing them, seems to make his expression sober up even further. It was not something he'd considered. After all, his responsibility was to save and protect humanity, and up to this point he'd considered his actions with the titans to be in line with that—although if they were humans, wasn't it the opposite?
